Transcona: the railway town at the end of Regent Avenue
The hotel sits in a part of Winnipeg that was its own town until 1972. A little history makes the drive in more interesting.
Illustration, not a photograph of the hotel
Transcona is a ward and suburb of Winnipeg, about 10 km east of downtown according to Wikipedia. It lists Club Regent Casino among the area's attractions alongside the Transcona Historical Museum, Kildonan Place and Kilcona Park.
Built for the railway
The story Wikipedia tells is a prairie classic. In 1908 the Grand Trunk Pacific and National Transcontinental railways, building a second line across Canada, chose a flat, empty stretch east of Winnipeg for their repair and maintenance shops. The name joined Transcontinental with Strathcona, after Lord Strathcona. The town was incorporated on 6 April 1912, became a city in 1961, and joined Winnipeg in the 1972 amalgamation. In 1966 it adopted the slogan "The Park City".
Canadian National is still, per the same article, a major employer in the community.
The Transcona Museum — on Regent Avenue too
The museum's address is 141 Regent Avenue West, the same avenue as the hotel at 1415. Its largest artifact is CN 2747, the first steam locomotive built in Western Canada and the first constructed at the CN Transcona Shops, in April 1926. It was retired in 1960 and has stood outdoors in what is now Rotary Heritage Park; the museum has owned it since late 2015.
One timing note: the museum is taking its wartime exhibit to Kildonan Place from 6 to 11 November, and says it will be closed to the public during that run. Phone 204-222-0423 before you go.
Route between the museum and the hotel
Kildonan Place
The shopping centre at 1555 Regent Avenue West — again, the same avenue — says it has more than 100 stores and services. Wikipedia dates its opening to 24 September 1980. On a January afternoon it's the nearest indoor walk that isn't the casino.
Transcona by season
- Cold
Winter
Indoor options: Kildonan Place, the museum when open, the Event Centre. Outdoors: dress for wind on Regent's open lots.
- Thaw
Spring
Melt season. Parking lots turn to slush; the covered parkade earns its keep a second time.
- Warm
Summer
Kilcona Park and the 'Park City' slogan make more sense. Long evenings, short drives.
- Shows
Autumn
Show season starts at the Event Centre — eight dates from early November to mid-December 2026.
What Transcona is not
It's not a tourist district. It's a working, mostly residential part of the city — Wikipedia calls it "primarily a working-class residential area with some light industry". That's an honest description of the view from most hotel windows too. You come here for the building and its stage, and you drive into the city for its sights.
