Journal
Short essays that didn't fit on the practical pages. Each one is sourced like the rest of the site.
Illustration, not a photograph of the hotel
I keep this section for the threads that run under a stay: history, timing, the odd detail that a venue's own website won't mention. New entries arrive when there's something worth saying, not on a schedule.
- History
The tunnel where the fish used to be
Wikipedia's account of a decommissioned saltwater aquarium between the casino's two halves, and why I only half-trust it.
- History
One railway, two ends of the city
The Grand Trunk Pacific built Transcona's shops and one of The Forks Market's stables.
- Planning
A show night in November
Planning Thursday 12 November around ribs, doors at six and a warm walk back.
- Winter
Packing for January
What the climate normals tell you to bring — and what the building lets you leave at home.
How I write these
Every journal entry starts from a document — a venue page, a museum's own notes, a Wikipedia article I've checked against its citations. Where I add an opinion, it's marked as mine. Where a source is secondary, the sentence says so. That's slower than writing from memory, and it's the only way I know to avoid repeating something that stopped being true two years ago.
Where these facts come from
- Wikipedia — Club Regent Casino (secondary)
- Wikipedia — Transcona (secondary)
- Wikipedia — The Forks, Winnipeg (secondary)
- Club Regent Event Centre — show listings
- Wikipedia — Winnipeg, climate section citing Environment and Climate Change Canada (secondary)
Checked by the editor on 31 October 2026. Hours, show dates and policies change; the venue's own page wins over ours.
