Winnipeg in winter, seen from a hotel you never have to leave
The cold is real. The hotel's best quality is that it lets you choose when to meet it.

I'll begin with numbers, because they set the plan. Wikipedia, citing Environment and Climate Change Canada normals, gives Winnipeg a January mean around −16.4 °C and about twelve days a year with wind chill below −40. It also calls the city's winters "long, severely cold". Plan around that, and Winnipeg in winter is a very good trip.
The indoor day
Here is a whole day at Club Regent without a coat. Breakfast at Aaltos from 7 am. A slow morning. Lunch buffet from 11:30 am on weekdays, or Sunday brunch until 2 pm. Dinner buffet from 5 pm, Thursday to Sunday. A show at the Event Centre with doors at 6 or 7 pm. Ice cream at the casino's counter afterwards — it's open until midnight. Every step is connected indoors.
The casino floor and its bars are part of that indoor world for adults over 18. You don't need to visit them; the restaurant, the hall and the hotel are enough for a weekend.
The outdoor day
When you want the cold on your own terms, drive west to The Forks. The Nestaweya River Trail can reach up to 10 km in a good season, and the Market Plaza has a canopied skating rink. The Canadian Museum for Human Rights is beside it for the afternoon.

More than 100 stores on Regent Avenue West; an indoor walk on the coldest day.
Festival du Voyageur
The festival's organisers have announced 12 to 21 February 2027 for the next edition. The 2026 festival, its 57th, ran from 13 to 22 February at Whittier Park, with day tickets from 10 am to midnight and evening tickets from 6 pm. Some days sell out; the festival advises buying in advance. Tickets for 2027 were not yet on sale when I checked.
Whittier Park is a drive from Regent Avenue; Club Regent is an east-side base with a covered car park, not a walk-to-the-gates hotel.
What to ask for in winter
- A room near the indoor link to the casino and Event Centre.
- A room away from the outside wall that takes the wind, if the desk knows which one that is.
- A late checkout on the day of a long drive home — you'll want daylight on the highway.
The coldest packing questions are answered in Packing for January.
